Contemporary House Extension, 32 Baberton Crescent, Edinburgh
2015.
The client for this project needed more space for their growing family. The house originally had a badly designed attic conversion and a kitchen which was small and disconnected from the dining area. Capital A redesigned the attic into a master bedroom with ensuite and created a new contemporary extension in the driveway. The existing kitchen was enlarged and the space incorporated into the new extension, creating an open plan kitchen / dining space. The extension maximises natural light and the new cantilevered roof is a modern interpretation of the large eaves on the existing house. The rear of the extension has a large sheltered deck, the new roof of which incorporates an existing bay window. This sheltered deck is an intermediate zone, allowing the client to be outside in their garden on days when the weather is less than perfect. The proportions of the deck are also a pleasing addition to the house. The new layout has revitalised the house and the extension has become a hub for family life.
For more details see this blog post on the project.
Construction Costs
The project cost £70,000 + VAT. This works out at £2,800 + VAT per square meter. This included comprehensive refurbishment to the existing house and significant alteration to the ground floor layout.
These costs were relevant when the project was completed in 2015. Prices have changed since this was built, see this post for more details of current construction costs.
