House Extension Greyfriars, Longniddry, East Lothian
The new owners of this early 20th Century villa in Longniddry, East Lothian, wanted to modernise the kitchen and dining space so that it took advantage of spectacular views North over the local golf course and the Firth of Forth. Capital A was commissioned to design a new extension which would combine a modern kitchen, with a living room and dinging space, while also providing additional storage and a new entrance to the house.
The brief called for a space that was multipurpose, bright and inviting but the design also had to merge seamlessly with the existing house. The extension is split over two, subtle levels. With the new kitchen on the same level as the house and the new living room down two steps, on the same level as the entrance and rear garden.
This move has several advantages; it raises the floor to ceiling height, it allows a seamless entry to the building and it creates a sense that the open plan space is subdivided, without being too obvious.
The project also involved internal alterations to the house and landscaping to the garden, which will continue into 2015.
This extension shows that a simple Architectural idea, can be very effective.
